OPERATION UNIFIED RESOLVE: CHINOOKS, TROOPS AND THE MILITARY'S CONCENTRATED PUSH INTO THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY
Hundreds of U.S. service members have been moved into the Rio Grande Valley since early October under a military operation called Unified Resolve. Army CH-47 Chinook helicopters are carrying them to stretches of the river that are hard to reach by road. The helicopters have been heard over Valley neighborhoods day and night.
This report lays out what the military has confirmed, what officials have said on background, and what remains unverified.
WHAT THE MILITARY CONFIRMED
On Oct. 2, 2026, U.S. Northern Command announced that Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) had launched Operation Unified Resolve. The command described it as an ongoing effort to rapidly reinforce U.S. forces and federal partners in the Rio Grande Valley.

According to the release, hundreds of JTF-SB service members and their equipment were repositioning to the Valley. The stated goals are to increase patrol capacity, reinforce key areas, add monitoring and detection capability, and secure critical locations in support of the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Unified Resolve falls under Operation Ardent Vanguard. That is the overarching name Northern Command uses for its border mission against unlawful migration, narcotics trafficking, human smuggling and related criminal activity.
The troops are not new to the border. Northern Command spokesperson Becky Farmer told Border Report the surge was not in addition to the existing mission. She said the troops were pulled from other areas along the southern border and massed in the Valley.
Border Report confirmed the troops were patrolling from McAllen in Hidalgo County and throughout Starr County.
THE AVIATION PIECE
The visible change for Valley residents is the helicopters.
Border Report confirmed Chinook helicopters were part of the surge. A photo published Oct. 8 showed troops stepping off an Army helicopter onto an island in the Rio Grande at Roma.
Moving troops by air is an established JTF-SB tactic. Military imagery shows:
July 31, 2025: A Chinook from the 1st Infantry Division's 1st Combat Aviation Brigade carried an M1301 Infantry Squad Vehicle during an air assault mission in the Otay Mountains of California.
April 2, 2026: Chinooks from the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade flew exfiltration missions to pull soldiers off foot patrols near Sierra Vista, Arizona.
July 2, 2026: Chinook crews sling-loaded communications equipment into the Big Bend Sector.
July 7 to 9, 2026: Soldiers trained loading Infantry Squad Vehicles into Chinooks near Yuma, Arizona.
Note: Those Infantry Squad Vehicle lifts took place in California and Arizona. I have not found public confirmation that Infantry Squad Vehicles have been airlifted inside the Rio Grande Valley under Unified Resolve.
WHAT PRECEDED THE SURGE
On Sept. 26, 2026, Coast Guard personnel took gunfire from the Mexican side of the river near Garceno in Starr County. The Coast Guard said its crew was conducting joint interdiction operations with federal partners, returned fire, and reported no injuries.
Officials told Border Report and NewsNation the troop surge came after that shooting. NewsNation's officials put the surge at roughly 500 troops. Northern Command's own release says "hundreds" and does not give a number.
Mexico's Navy announced it was deploying nearly 160 ground troops in response to the incident, according to Breitbart Texas.
THE BIGGER MISSION
JTF-SB was established March 14, 2025. Military support at the border began earlier, in January 2025.
The task force is now led by Army Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor, commander of the 1st Armored Division. He took command May 29, 2026, from Maj. Gen. David Gardner of the 101st Airborne Division. Taylor is the task force's third commander.
The Army reported these cumulative figures at that change of command:
More than 20,000 service members have deployed to the mission since March 2025.
More than 33,000 detection and monitoring missions.
Nearly 4,500 joint patrols with CBP agents.
Close to 1,100 joint, mirrored patrols with Mexican partners.
About 59,000 rolls of concertina wire, which the Army called the largest barrier reinforcement in U.S. history.
Nearly 8,000 signs and more than 3,100 buoys across 656 miles marking five national defense areas.
The 20,000 figure is a running total of everyone who has rotated through since March 2025. It is not the number of troops at the border today.
Counter-drone work is a large part of the mission. As of Sept. 4, 2026, Northern Command said the Army's high energy laser system had brought down 11 cartel drones. The command reported more than 300 drone defeats this year using kinetic and non-kinetic systems, with more than 100 in August alone.
The deployment continues to draw new units. In October, 120 New York Army National Guard soldiers from the 204th Engineer Battalion began a yearlong mobilization to Texas under Ardent Vanguard.
WHAT REMAINS OPEN
How many troops are in the Valley right now. The military has said only "hundreds."
How long Unified Resolve will last. The command calls it ongoing.
Which aviation unit is flying the Valley missions, and from where.
Whether troops are operating on private land, and what agreements are in place with landowners.
Whether flight schedules or noise mitigation are being considered for residential areas.
What the gunfire investigation has found about who fired on the Coast Guard.
